According to the company led by Mark Zuckerberg, half of Instagram users use the ‘Explore’ section every month to discover new photos, videos and stories of interest.

Facebook told how it uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to choose the content of the ‘Explore’ tab for each user of its social network Instagram, through a system that prioritizes accounts over publications and selects 500 publications that are reduced after to 25.

According to the company led by Mark Zuckerberg, half of Instagram users use the ‘Explore’ section every month to discover new photos, videos and stories of interest.

The tab uses several AI mechanisms with which it extracts 65,000 million features and makes more than 90 million predictions every second, Facebook said in a statement.

The company said that Instagram has a completely varied content “with topics that vary from Arabic calligraphy to train models”, which is a challenge when recommending content. Therefore, Instagram focuses on the information of the accounts that might interest users, rather than publications.

To identify these accounts, Instagram uses a machine learning method known as word embedding or word embedding, analyzing words in context – that is, according to the words that surround it – as well as user interactions with other accounts . In this way, the social network determines the probability that the two accounts interact. It uses a similar process to determine how similar two social network accounts are.

The ‘Explore’ system begins by observing what Facebook calls “seed accounts”, accounts with which users have interacted in the past by giving ‘like’ or saving their posts) to make recommendations.

As a first step, the system identifies accounts similar to these and chooses 500 pieces of content, which make up the catalog of publications among which it subsequently uses other ranking algorithms to determine which ones will be more interesting.

Of those 500 publications, choose the 150 most relevant and highest quality candidates. Then spam accounts are filtered and those that can violate the content policy of the social network, leaving 50 candidates. Finally, after passing these filters, the main 25 publications are shown in the ‘Explore’ tab of each user.

The company noted that one of the most “exciting” parts of creating this tab is “the ongoing challenge of finding new and interesting ways” to help your community “discover the most interesting and relevant content on Instagram.”
